If you’ve had the opportunity to work with us, then you know our family team is large. It can also be a little confusing, with so many brothers on a job site, it’s sometimes tough to know who is who! Today we’d like to introduce you to Josy, our resident shelving and closet expert.

Q: Tell us about your role with Next Custom Homes? What does your day-to-day look like?

I mainly work on shelving and any wiring within a home. So the sound systems, lighting, internet, and any sort of specialty shelving. I also design the closets.

Q: How long have you been part of the NEXT team?

I’ve been doing this for about 10 years, 8 years full time. I started working when I was 14 years old just riding along with my dad and helping out with any small tasks. Then I gradually worked my way up doing odd jobs on the build sites and trim. Now, I focus on custom shelving and wiring.

Q: What do you love about your job?

I don’t like to be in the same place for very long. So this job is great because every day is different, often at a different location. I could be building a deck at one place and then later in the day working on shelving at a build across town. It’s always changing and I like that. Lately, I’ve been sticking to the same type of work, so for example closets and shelving, I’ve been focused on that for the last 6 months, so it might be time for me to move on to something else.

Q: What’s it like working alongside your family?

I’m sure my brothers have answered this question the same way! It has its ups and downs. As long as everyone is happy, it’s good. When someone is upset then it’s not so great. At the end of a project, it’s usually me, Jesse, and Danny. I like to do things right, so sometimes it takes a while and I may work with them, or it might just be me. It’s a good balance.

Q: Talk about your favorite project

Oak Crest was my favorite project. My dad trusted me to work within my skill set to design and create all the closets in the home for the first time. They turned out great. Although, due to some plumbing issues we had to cut part of the design, it still turned out to be a great space.

Q: What are your future goals?

That’s hard to say, but I’ll probably stay here and work with my brothers. One day I’d like to maybe have my own furniture or closet building shop. I like building furniture in my spare time and people reach out to me to help design and build their closets, but I never have the time.

Q: Favorite movie or book?

Hmm that’s hard, I don’t really have one.

Q: Favorite place to get food in Austin?

Yardhouse

Q: What’s one thing you can’t live without?

Music!
