The NEXT team works closely together on every project, from designing closets to digging pipelines, we all have our specialties. Our team is constantly growing and includes family members and business partners we consider as close as family. Today we’d like to introduce our Project Manager, Micah Drew.
Meet Micah Drew: Project Manager
Q: Tell us about your role with Next Custom Homes? What does a day-in-the-life of a Project Manager look like?
A: I’m in charge of getting sub-contractors scheduled and supervising everyone on site. Day-to-day varies quite a bit. Sometimes I’m hoping job to job managing people and making sure things get done right. Other days I’m digging holes, planting, or building a deck because everything else is taken care of for the moment at a particular property.
Q: What is your specialty?
A: My area of expertise is a little difficult to define, you could say I’m a Jack Of All Trades. I can do anything, really. Even if I’m just sweeping, I’m gonna be the best damn sweeper you’ll ever see! But honestly, I’d say I’m most experienced at installing windows, decks, wood flooring, and landscaping.
Q: How long have you been part of the NEXT team?
A: I’ve been doing this pretty much my whole life! I remember helping my dad build the house I grew up in. But, I started working a lot more when I was around 13 and full-time during the day with homeschool at night when I was around 15 or 16 years old.
Q: What do you love about your job?
A: My favorite part is definitely when people buy the house and express how much they love it and our attention to detail. A lot of the hard work that goes into a custom home build is never seen by anyone, so it’s nice to feel appreciated.
Q: What’s it like working alongside your family?
A: Working with my family has a lot of ups and downs, but definitely a lot more ups! We’re all really close and I’m very thankful for how my siblings have turned into some of my best friends. At the end of the day, we’re all pretty goofy and we have a lot of fun!
Q: Talk about your favorite project
A: One of my favorite projects to date was absolutely horrible while we were doing it. We trimmed out all 9 buildings at Austin Discovery School and had to work inside, with no airflow, in the middle of summer. We wore pants, shirts, and hard hats obviously for safety and protection. But I remember it being so hot that summer I couldn’t drink enough water to feel hydrated. There were only 3 of us working on that project, and for whatever reason, we all look back on it as a really good memory, even though at the time we hated it.
Q: Do you have any role models?
A: I don’t really believe in role models, it tends to set you up for disappointment. But if I need advice about anything, I ask my dad. The dude is a different kind of human.
Q: What are your future goals?
A: My goals for the next couple of years are to buy my own house with land. I’m also looking forward to getting our new custom cabinet shop up and running smoothly. Maybe I’ll take another couple solo backpacking trips. Oh, and I’d like to help NEXT build 15 houses $1M+ per year.
